Implementing the Semantic KDE Desktop

Chair: Jos van den Oever

The goal of this BoF session is to deal with the practical side of the vision described by the "Towards a Semantic KDE Desktop" presentation. Therefore it has to be considered as its natural sequel. It will first remind some of the key ideas of the Social Semantic Desktop vision, then present the current status in regards to the KDE desktop and before concluding with an open round-table discussion, will present examples of how to improve the existing or develop new services for the Semantic KDE platform.

In a more concrete form, here are the key discussion points:

  1. Foundation:
    • What is in reality the Semantic Desktop
  2. Background information:
    • What is an ontology
    • Why is it useful
    • How is it stored
    • How can ontologies help in building a Semantic Desktop
  3. Development:
    • Which are the specific KDE4 applications that contribute to the next generation Semantic KDE Desktop
    • How to build semantic KDE applications
