Dealing with the Press - How to expend as little effort as possible maximising your project's publicity
Speaker: Graham Morrison
Look at the first line of the KDE 3.5 press release, "Many new features and refinements make KDE the complete free desktop environment." It doesn't exactly grab the reader, shake them into a frenzy, and shout, "KDE THREE POINT FIVE IS HERE!!!!" Which is what it should be doing. Publicity is an afterthought, KDE is growing, and this means that every dour press release is a missed opportunity to capitalise on the amazing achievements of Team KDE. As a Linux journalist, I propose a presentation on how to maximise your project's exposure. It will start with the basics; when to publish a press release, how it should be presented, and what information to include. It will then move on to targeting specific publications, dealing with an international audience and building a relationship with the Press. The target audience will be developers who understand the need for publicity, as well as general users who want to find a non-technical way of contributing to a project.
